The Senedd’s Culture, Welsh Language and Communications Committee has conducted several investigations into the area of ​​media including press coverage, and one special report in 2018 – ‘Headlines’ – is an inquiry into news journalism in Wales.

On ‘U.K’ level the Cairncross Review was published in February 2019. It was a comprehensive report by academic and journalist Dame Frances Cairncross. It was drawn up at the request of the Prime Minister who was concerned about the sustainability of the news industry in the modern age. The 157 page 9 report made recommendations that had the potential to improve the prospects for quality journalism. These included the creation of a new body – the Public Benefit News Foundation, a fund for new initiatives and tax advantages.
