ENG – Rheoliadau Newyddion

  1. News in the media, which is broadcasted to and in Wales, must set out the regulations regarding the subject in question, as is the case in Wales.

If the regulations of other countries are referred to, it must be clear stated to which country they are referring.

If reporting on regulations that are not operational in Wales, it must be stated to which country(ies) they apply and the equivalent regulation in Wales must be stated. The reason for mentioning the other country’s regulations must be obvious, clear and important.

THE PURPOSE OF THE REGULATION: TO ENSURE THAT THE INFORMATION PRESENTED TO THE AUDIENCE IS CORRECT; FOR THE SAKE OF OUR DEMOCRACY; TO UNDO DECADES OF A LACK OF REPORTING.

2. News that is reported about other nations of the British Isles in the media, which is broadcasted to and in Wales, must cover the situations in all other countries of the British Isles, unless there is a legitimate reason for giving more attention to a regulation in one country above the others.

For example, if there is a report on an education regulation in England, the positions of the other nations of the British Isles in that regard must be stated. Likewise, if there is a development in the economy of, say, Scotland, the corresponding policies in the other countries of the British Isles must be considered.

THE PURPOSE OF THE REGULATION: TO ENSURE THAT ENGLAND IS NOT PRESENTED AS THE THE ‘NORM’ WITH WHICH OTHER COUNTRIES SHOULD BE COMPARED. ALTHOUGH SCOTLAND IS USED AS AN EXAMPLE HERE, WE NEED TO MOVE AWAY FROM THE CURRENT PRACTICE OF DRAWING COMPARISONS WITH ENGLAND ONLY.

 3. More attention should not be given, when discussing international affairs (outside the other countries of the British Isles), to English-speaking countries compared to other countries, unless there is a justifiable reason to do so.

For example, why report on what is happening in the United States, while not mentioning Germany, France, Sweden and Norway.

THE PURPOSE OF THE REGULATION: TO ENSURE THAT THE AUDIENCE ARE NOT LED TO BELIEVE THAT THE COUNTRIES WHERE ENGLISH IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN OTHER COUNTRIES. THIS REGULATION IS REQUIRED TO UNDO CENTURIES OF COLONIALISM. BROADCASTERS IN OUR COUNTRY HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO HELP IN THE DECOLONISATION OF OUR NATION AND TO ENSURE OUR DEVELOPMENT AS A FREE THINKING AND INTERNATIONAL MINDED PEOPLE.

 4. The equivalent time spent on reporting on political news from Westminster relating to Wales, which is broadcasted to and in Wales, must be spent on reporting on what is happening, in relation to the same topic area, in Wales’ democratic institutions (Senedd / Local Authoraties /Community or Town Councils). For example, if reporting for 3 minutes about what is happening in Westminster in relation to Brexit, broadcasters would have to spend 3 minutes discussing what is / has happened in our democratic institutions regarding Brexit.

THE PURPOSE OF THE REGULATION: TO ENSURE THAT THE PEOPLE OF WALES ARE AWARE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING IN OUR SENEDD AND IN OUR OTHER DEMOCRATIC CENRES;TO ENABLE SCRUTINY AND HOLDING TO ACCOUNT; TO CREATE AWARENESS THAT OUR MAIN DEMOCRATIC CENTRES ARE OUR LOCAL AUTHORITIES, OUR COMMUNITY AND TOWN COUNCILS AND OUR SENEDD AND NOT WESTMINSTER.
